Lumberjacks Defeat Shattuck-St. Mary's Prep OT

(11-21-08) The MSU-B Lumberjacks (3-3) defeated the Shattuck-St. Mary's Sabres Prep (13-6-5) hockey squad 3-2 in overtime action at the Lumberdome Friday evening.

The two teams square off again at 3:00 pm Sat.

Why are the Lumberjacks playing a prep team, you ask? Well, this is no ordinary prep team. Last year they defeated the Lumberjacks 7-3, 7-2 and 9-2. They are the 2007 and 2008 defending national champions and have had hockey greats such as Sidney Crosby, Patrick Eaves and Zach Parise playing on their team, pus lots of other great UND alumni.

Check out their 2008-09 schedule: They've already won the Nike-Bauer National Invitational Tournament.

Here's the Shattuck-St. Mary's Wiki page. Scroll down to see the hockey greats that have played there.

Here's link to the Western College Hockey Blog (presumably for recruiting purposes) showing the team roster including where the players are from and comments on the team's potential.

Dustin Penner Scores Winning Goal (6-05-07)

Dustin Penner, alumnus of the MSU-Bottineau hockey program, scored the winning goal in period 3 of the 4th game of the Stanley Cup Finals in Ottawa Monday night.

The Anaheim Ducks are within a win of their first Stanley Cup championship.

Andy McDonald scored two goals in the second period, then shook free of hard-hitting Chris Neil and assisted on Dustin Penner's game-winner in the third, giving Anaheim a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night.

Penner’s goal with 16 minutes left came on a 2-on-1 rush just as he had jumped on the ice for a line change.

Andy McDonald started the play when he avoided Chris Neil’s check and chipped it up the right boards to Selanne. After Selanne and Penner nearly collided at the Ottawa blue line, Selanne took the puck wide to the right of the net, drawing defender Anton Volchenkov and goalie Ray Emery with him.

Selanne then threaded a pass through the crease, which Penner easily tipped in.

For Penner, it was his third goal this postseason and second game-winner. Not bad for a player who made his mark during last year’s playoffs and translated that into a regular season in which he finished with 29 goals — second among NHL rookies — and 45 points. It was the first goal for Penner since Game Three of the Western Conference semifinals against Vancouver, a span of 12 games.
